Overview
The intent of this third lesson is to work through the steps of syncing a Revit® file, reviewing BIM elements, and linking elements to suggested specification sections.
For your convenience, we've attached a Revit® file for use when walking through the steps of syncing.
Syncing a Revit® File
Revit® “.rvt” files can be synced with SpecLink Cloud projects using an integrated SpecLink Cloud Revit Plugin. This will provide real-time workflows between Revit and SpecLink Cloud.
Before beginning this lesson, we suggest you complete the following:
- Download and save the attached "Sample_Revit_2026.rvt" file to a location you can easily access.
- Review the SpecLink Cloud Revit Plugin system requirements
- Download and install the SpecLink Cloud Revit Plugin
Once completing the above, learn how to sync a Revit file to SpecLink Cloud by following the steps below.
- From within Revit, start by locating the Add-In tab.
- Once in the Add-Ins tab, click on the integrated SpecLink Revit Plug-In icon.
- A pop-up will appear to Login to SpecLink Cloud. Input user credentials and click Login.
- Select the "Atlanta Office Building" project from Quick Start Lesson 1 and then click "Sync". A notification will appear when the sync is complete.
- Return to the SpecLink Cloud Dashboard.
- Open the "Atlanta Office Building" project where the Revit model was synced.
- From within the project, locate the BIM Files tab near the top of the page.
- In the BIM Files tab, the newly synced Revit Model will now appear on this file list.
The model is now connected to your specification project.
Reviewing BIM Elements
A Revit® “.rvt” file is a collection of BIM elements. When a Revit® file is synced to a SpecLink Cloud Project, these elements become available for review.
- From within the project, select the BIM files tab.
- Click on the name of the Revit® file.
- The list of BIM elements included in the Revit® file will appear on the left of the window, while the sections list (All and Active) will appear on the right. In the BIM Elements list, locate the forth element (Type Name: 36" x 84" – Family: Sgl Flush) click on the count “5”.
- All 5 instances of the element will be displayed. Click the "Show More" link within the first element to review the detailed information of the element.
- The detailed information for the selected element from the Revit file will appear. (Sample_Revit_2026.rvt has not been filled out with full details, so many fields will be missing)
- Return to the BIM files tab by clicking the back arrow in the top left.
Linking Elements to Suggested Specification Sections
- From the BIM files tab within the Atlanta Office Building project, click on the name of the Revit® file.
- The list of BIM elements included in the Revit® file will appear on the left of the window, while the sections list (All and Active) will appear on the right.
- Confirm that the element list is sorted by Category.
- In the element category list, select Doors.
- In the fifth element window, for "Overhead Rolling Doors" click the “Show More” button to review the elements data.
The detailed information for the element will appear. To select the element, click anywhere within the element and the edges will highlight blue.
SpecLink Cloud will display a window of suggested specification sections for the element on the right.
- In the Suggested Sections window, scroll and select the Revit® “R” logo next to the Overhead Coiling Doors, Section 083323. This action links the element with the specification section, and adds it to the Linked Sections Window.
